Eutelsat: China shut down TV signal

BEIJING, July 26 (UPI) --

Officials with a Chinese-language TV network allege the Chinese government has shut down its signal from the Eutelsat satellite company.

New Tang Dynasty Television official Cathy Zhang alleged the Chinese government pressured Eutelsat to shut down its signal in order to stop the uncensored TV group from broadcasting, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.

Zhang, general manager of the network's office in Palo Alto, Calif., said New Tang's controversial programming has proven threatening to the government.

"We are the only (Chinese) channel not under the state's control," Zhang said. "Our coverage is controversial from the communist regime's point of view."

"We just want to bring the truth to the Chinese people. They get a filtered view from the government."

The Chronicle said Eutelsat, which is based out of Paris, has blamed the signal outage on a technical problem.
