Wonderful website. I worked in the Royal Viking Line office when it was headquartered in San Francisco. It was like a second family and we all had great pride working for the company. It was sad for us when the office closed. Thank you, Jan-Olav, for creating your website. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your Viking Line Story.

Havn't seen much yet, but I want to see/learn more. However, I think it is a bit hard to orientate, i.e. to find/search for the content/the different chapters.

Will surely come back and read more! I am an Norwegian (from Oslo) myself, and live in Sweden (Stockholm) since 1988. I read your "My Return to Norway" and I agree about what you write about the Norwegians.
I having been employed 20 years in the cruise ship sector; the last 6 years my employer is the italian cruise line shipping company MSC Cruises (www.msccruises.com). I work as an Account Manager in Sweden.

In May1992, my wife & I cruised onboard the SS Norway, on a 7-nights Caribbean cruise from Miami. The cruise was a surprice for my wife, who celebrated her 40th birtday the departure day (2nd of May). The ships was really big (!) at that time

I worked on the Norway for 18 months in 1987-1989. I was a Gift Shop Manager. I loved that ship and have many fond memories of parties on Dolphin Deck. Remember the Korean soup after a night in the crew bar? I still remember the first day I walked onto the ship and it seemed like I walked forever before I could find the office to sign on.

This wonderful website has really given me the push I needed to continue the raise of grade in my licensing to move on to large passenger vessels, which is also my childhood dream.

Any France or Norway stories for the website?

I was able to see this classic beautiful ship only once on a visit to Miami. My ex-wife and I owned a travel agency and recieved the pleasure of touring the vessel. It was an experience I will never forget. She will be truely missed.

My husband and I were cruise staff on the Norway and White Ships between 1981-1984. We met on the Starward Christmas week 1983. Does anyone remember New Year's Eve on the Starward that year? YIKES!!! ROGUE WAVES!!!We married in June 1984 while on the M/S Skyward in Key West.
Kevin was "Dive In" and I was a "Child Molestor", as they called us (Child Coordinator).
So many fond memories of life onboard the ships...but I'll never forget the moment I laid eyes on the S/S Norway and all of her majesty. The LINES of her were breathtaking. She'll be missed.

Thank you for establishing this site. Will be good to stay in touch with the happenings.

Any France or Norway stories for the website?

Kevin remembers occasionally sneaking onto the bowsprit of the SS Norway...at night! He would have been fired if they caught him crawling on the bow (under the tenders) to make his way forward but he says the risk was well worth it. So quiet, so far off the water and so small in the world.
Kevin also tells of helping Phyllis Diller onto the tender in rough seas. She lost her balance and the first place Kevin grabbed her was her BUTT! She laughed her BAWDY laugh and thanked him for the most excitement she's had in years.

Hi. Jan O.
Haven’t seen you since we both were 1st officers on “SS Norway” in 1996
We also were fellow students on the Maritime Academy in Tromsø, year 1992/93

Your web. page is very good Jan O. It brings back lots of unforgettable memories. from my time in Royal Viking Line (eighties) and NCL (nineties)
SS Norway is truly one of the ships I been working on in my career at sea with soul.
It is with sadness I see her in present condition on pictures from India
I am actually not far away from her location now; I am captain on a seismic survey vessel working in India (Bay of Bengal)
Send me some words on my private mail Jan O, would be nice to hear from you again.

Once again, I enjoyed your web. page

I love reading about the 'Norway', i have found many fine websites about her, but never have i found such a large collection of simple facts and memories concerning her. I have spent many evenings digesting all of the information on this site and im not even half way through the forums yet! Congratulations to you Jan for starting such a great site, and equal congratulations and thanks to all who have made this site what it is.

Any France or Norway stories for the website?

All i can say is that i only ever saw the great SS France/SS Norway once, and that was when i was on holiday in the Isle of Wight when i was about 6. I remember my dad pointing out to me a lovely looking liner that was heading out along the south coast of the island, he told me that she was heading for america. He told me it was the SS France, i asked how he knew because the ship was so far away?. He told me to look at the funnels, so i did, and that picture is still clear in my mind today - nearly 38 years later. That was the only time i ever saw her in real life, i grew up having no knowledge of her becoming the 'Norway'. I had of course heard of the great 'Norway', but not having seen any pictures of her i had no clue of her past. It was not until that sad day in 2003 when i saw her on the news that it dawned on me that the 'Norway' must be that lovely looking liner i remembered from my childhood.

My late husband and I sailed the lovely SS NORWAY in Aug. '92, just 2 days before Hurricane Andrew came in. And also sailed her in June '94, finally in '02. We were supposed to have sailed on her on Nov. 8th, '03.
Very sad to lose such a fine liner. My husband loved the ship.

This is the most excellent site to see and read about the SS NORWAY. I hope to add some photos that you might not have. Spending 3 different cruises on this ship was a grand experience. They just don't make them like her anymore.

My wife and I enjoyed our Honeymoon on the Norway in June 1984. This was our 3rd cruise on a NCL ship. We picked up the Norway in Barbados and sailed back to Miami. We were in port with the HMS Invincible on her way back from the Falklands. The Norway was a beautiful ship. Due the manner in which NCL has handled the Norway since her boiler explosion, we will never again book a cruise on NCL.

I feel so lucky to have discovered your website today! And, you look so familiar! Jan-Olav, perhaps we were friends many years ago! I worked as Shore Excursions Manager for both NCL and Royal Viking Line back in the mid-1980s thru approx 1994 (with one year during this period spent with Princess Cruises). But NCL and RVL were and still are my first loves, although since those days I've worked onboard the QE2, and was later Travel Manager for 5 years with Seabourn, and most recently another 5 years with Silversea. I hope this important website will help to bring together old friends from those glory days of NCL and RVL. I would love to hear from anyone who might remember working with me back in those wonderful days! Jan-Olav, CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU for taking the time and effort to put this website together! Thank you, Scott (Kinney)
