Photo above is of Cook's Grocery taken Apr 1975. It was at the center of Nankipoo. It was later owned by the Ward family. I think some time in the 80's it was torn down, and with it ; the last visible sign of "downtown" Nankipoo

I came across Nankipoo on an obscure link from a friend I\'ve never actually met on facebook. But the name stuck with me. Its just too good to be true. But truth is stranger than fiction. I hope to visit someday soon. I hope I don\'t miss it while driving through. Is it on the map? (from webmaster) Yes its on the map, and its on the Tn display map outside the Tn capital building. :) |

My whole life is a Nankipoo Story, since 1943... lol... I was in Gibson Co for 20 years, raisin' my sons and teaching school... but came 'home to roost' in 1980... right here at 'telegraph hill' as it was called when that was the communication of the day.... we've come a L o N g W a Y , Baby! to the internet tower now in Nankipoo! Along with Hilliard's I am related to all the Cates and Olds . hi, cuz! Ruth and Roy Hilliard, Jr. were my parents, Roy and Oma Cates Hilliard were my grandparents, and also N A and Thresa Arwood Bryan. I remember Sunday School and Bible School at Enon... my grandmother, Oma Cates Hilliard taught at Nankipoo School. I remember Willie and Grady Cook's store the most, I used to walk there through the woods..... but, there was another store at the crossroads ..... the Edith-Nankipoo/Curve Nankipoo crossroads..... and In my memory is a blacksmith across the road from Willie's store.... |

Lowell (Sr.) Tillman used to work with my daddy (Derrick Tillman) and I would go to work with daddy and ride home after work with Lowell to Nankipoo and stay with my grandparents. They lived behind the cemetary behind Enon Baptist Church. My fondest moments of growing up are in Nankipoo!!!!! |

I still visit my cousin, Lowell, occasionally - not often enough since I've been having grandbabies and staying busy with them! But love coming to see all my cousins and kinfolks there! Kay, Ray, Lowell (Jr.) and (Sr.), Cheryl and Glen.....and remember going to Miss Willie's store growing up, too! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH, GREAT memories!!!! LOVE Nankipoo!!!! |

I lived 21 years of my life at Nankipoo. I went to school 1-8 and then went to high school at Halls. My dad was Robert (Sonny) Wright and he and my mother Katherine lived there until there deaths. My fondist memories are of growing up in the small community and going to Cook's store where Mr. Cook always had a piece of candy for us. I was a member of Melville Methodist Church and remember many dinners on the ground there. I have begun painting and some of the painting reflect the old house we lived in with the out house and cloths line. Love to read the quest book. |

Attended Nankipoo School in grades 1-3 back when teachers could use bibles as well as text books in the schools. Ms. Georgie Smith, Ms. Ann Lazure, and Ms. Ann Smith taught me well and set me on the right path in life. |

No matter where I live, I'll always call Nankipoo home!!!!! My grandparents, H.C. (Happle) and Nettie Cavness lived and farmed just up the road from Nankipoo toward Jackie Walker's service station and restaurant. My father, the late Rev. Ray Cavness, was pastor at Enon Baptist Church when I was a child and have fond memories of playing in the yard at the house and church and, yes, in the cemetery!!!! Putting a sheet over your head and running around in the cemetery is quite entertaining!!! I attended Nankipoo school in first and second grade and again in the sixth grade after returning to the area from Baxter, TN, where daddy had been pastoring. I attended junior high and high school at Halls. Go TIGERS!! Daddy would bale hay around the community and often worked with Lowell Tillman, Sr., Clydie Cates, Tab Tillman, Raymond Belton and many others!!! Family names, like Ward, Bowie, Collins, Davis, Steelman, Stanley and many, many others are all like a part of my own family!!! Nankipoo may be be a tiny community, but my memories couldn't be bigger! I currently live in the Fowlkes community of Dyer County, but Nankipoo is home!! |

I grew up in Nankipoo. When I was 5 or 6 we moved from the Halls Air Base when it was closed. My dad (James M. Pickard) was employed at the air base during World War II. (Mother was Nellie Pickard.) We lived in a small white house just to the left of Cook's Grocery. Nankipoo was a great place to live and attend school. I had a lot of good times the 13 years that I lived there. |
