Holidays, military history and inspiration....and the French Vendee Revolts
While taking the family on holidays to the wonderful country of France in recent years I have been struck by just how much history there is there...and much of it is military in nature.
We've just returned from a holiday in the Vendee in western-Atlantic France where in the early years of the French Republic ie: 1793-96 there was a series of bitter Royalist-Catholic uprisings against the new regime. What I was less aware of was that during the 100 days in 1815, there was a further revolt, and indeed literally a couple of weeks before Waterloo 10,000 of Napoleon's Troops - equivalent to a large Division - were tied down in supressing a new uprising in the Vendee. Just think what might have happened if those troops were with Napoleon in Belgium instead in June 1815?
Anyone else having interesting holidays linked to military history? Any new inspirations coming out of these?
And since this is the HaT Forum after all...anyone else interested in a new Napoleonics set of French Vendeean anti-Republican forces??! Now that would be unusual....I wonder how well it would sell?
