I watched a Farrier shoeing a horse ony this morning strangly enough. Anyway lose the farrier/s and you start to lose horses, not good in a Napoleonic army my bet is they stayed way back with the baggage etc. . I seem to remember in an account of Borodino I think but cant swear too, that the large redoubt was expexted to be taken by the French at some point in the battle and thats why the built it open at the rear so they could take it back more easily, anyway I seem to recall the russians being at pains to have nothing in the redoubt that could be used to spike the guns,as they knew the French would have nothing to hand to spike them and be unable to take them out of the redoubt because of a lack of horse teams and the raised position of the guns. The plan being retake the redoubt and shell the French asap.
