Hey ya.
Me, I would undercoat nappie french in unit sized batches with white, then paint the coats, cuffs, flesh, muskets, black things & fine detail. Then I wait until they dry fully before pulling out the trusty ol' Winsor & Newton inks. A nice & even coat of ink will just make the detail pop out with minimal effort. I personally prefer to use brown ink as it makes the overall effect look warmer and more natural.
