Re: TV Series and made for TV films

Quote: PDA
I agree Lost Battalion is good. Another good made for TV film is All the King's Men, starring David Jason.

I'm surprised the WW2 "German" fans haven't mentioned, Schindler's List, The Pianist, Diary of Anne Frank, and Sophie's Choice. And the TV series, Holocaust.

Speaking of TV series that are good, has anyone seen Anzacs? I've just treated myself to it, and am slowly working through it. So far it's excellent.

I know some cuts from all the kings men from Youtube, but it´s not availlable in Germany and it will last decades before it is shown in TV.

Anzacs is also unheard of here. Sadly.

The WW2 Dramas you refer to are very impressive, especially Schindlers List I know very well because my wife (as a school teacher) shows it regular to their pupils (and sometimes to me). And yes, thanks for remembering again that war is not only parade and march music. Schindlers List shows very good what absolute psychos those Guards in the concentration camps must have been. And many things my ancestors did are a shame for any uniformed men (and I don´t make a difference between Wehrmacht, SS, Einsatzgruppen and all the other Killer Commandos the Nazis had - as it is unfortunately done here sometimes in Germany still today.... ).

Many Nations got black Spots in their History (British in the Boer War and for Amritsar, the U.S. in the Phillipines and in the Indian Wars, the Spanish in Cuba, the Turkish by their Armenian Massacres, the Russian Pogroms of their Jewish People, the Italians in Ethopia etc.....you know as much as me that I could refer for a long time about this topic), but the crimes of the Nazis got another Quality by the industrial Standard the Genocide had and by the absolute cynism how it was enforced (had a bitter argument with my own Grandpa who is dead years ago about Partisan Warfare (which he enforced as a young paratrooper of the Herman Göring Division) in Greece and Italy.....where stops legitimate military action and where starts war crimes and genocide.....????). So those movies are important to remember for what crimes are humans able.

But I can understand that nobody mentioned them because I asked for favourite Movies. Can somebody really like an important but still depressing movie like those mentioned? Even the mentioning of "Downfall" or "Stalingrad" suprises me because even by depicting the events 1945 in Berlin by an realistic standard according to historical research, I find the movie informative but wouldn´t see it regular as I do Zulu, Blackhawk Down, the Wind that shakes the Barley and others. There is no Glory in the atrocities or the end of a Dictatorship for the loosing side.

Think this is Germanys burden for now and the future be the first of many countries to fall into Hitlers line, to be the first where Democrats, Socialists, Communists, Gypsies and Jews where systematically murdered and who delivered eager accomplices to Hitler and his bunch of Criminals (nothing other they where, despite any facade of ideology, as wrong as also this was, they where only mad Criminals with the aim to surpress people and to get as much power and wealth as possible....they knew they where doing wrong.....) for exporting this crime to many poor Nations and to provoke a war where most of the whole worlds people where involved in the supression of these criminals. Germany is guilty, guilty for letting them get power, for fighting for them, for finding no way to arrest them for their crimes, for looking away when it had been necessary to see, for saying yes when it had been necessary to say no. For being the accomplices of one of the greatest Criminals in History. But we also paid a very high price for this. We paid it in blood and we will pay it in money, determination and even again blood to avoid that such crimes happen again.

So, to answer your indirect question,Í´m not really interested in any WW2 at all for my hobby (and so also not in movies showing the German side). I got a technical interest in weapons and tactics as a former soldier and I got a social interest in paying the moral debt Germany got since 1945 to the human community of the world. So I´ll support every action of my country that leads to an improvement for the world to pay this debt (U.N. Missions in Afghanistan for example, I´m convinced our Boys there do well for a country that knew only war for much of it´s existence.....but also political or economic help for starving or surpressed people), but with my heart i can only concentrate with my hobby on wars and eras in which i can respect the warriors on both sides and honor their courage because they fought well and brave for their countries which may also be wrong but not a crime. I honor my dead Granddads for their courage as Soldiers but both convinced me apart from each other, that no German can ever let such crimes happen again, and no German should fight again for such a Dictatorship.

Sorry, won´t be express too much politics, but as a German who ist interested in Military and does a military hobby you got to deal with this topic.

Thank you for bringing this thoughts on the Forum.

Greetings from Germany
Olli
