Re: Wargame Q: facing a force majeure of 16 artillery pieces?
Hi Deltafox,
about what a rule-System do we talk? Seems your opponent had more points to spent then you if he got an adavantage in every kind of troops (combined with a better Position)?
As a rule of thumb warfare in the Napoleonic age (as I presume) is a sort of Rock, Paper, Scissors. with Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery. Usually two of them are necessary to beat the third:
Artillery and Infantry (in Squares) can beat Cavalry (as seen at Waterloo)
Cavalry can break up the Squares of Infantry with Artillery support
Cavalry and Infantry together have a fair chance to storm a lone Artillery position (with some Casualities....as Napoleon wrote "the Invention of Artillery changed Warfare significantly)
When all three kinds of troops face each other, you got to use your advantage from the troop type you´re in advantage over your opponent
When you got an advantage with cavalry then rush on with Cavalry and support it with Artillery when you got enough of them and ride the enemy down then follow with your infantry
Storm with Infantry, best also supported with Artillery if you got a numerical advantage with infantry. soften your enemy up with artillery and skirmishers, support with cavalry to explore breakthroughs
When you got an advantage with Artillery (as your opponent) then gun your enemy down. Concentrate on tactical significant areas and clear them from his troops. Then Attack with your Infantry, occupy this position and again explore the Breakthrough with your Cavalry (think this is the Plan you´ll face).
In your situation I see no other chance then to storm with Infantry, as there you got your Advantage. But more exact evaluation depends on more detailed Information.
Which System (because tactical possibilities as Skirmishing, Ambush, tactical ability of your Units - Pandurs should be irregulars? etc. must also be taken into calculation....)
Which tactical Situation (is it absolutly necessary to storm that hill? Or can you await the Attack of your Opponent? Can you march arround the Position? Can your Cavalry attack from another Direction?)
Sorry that I can´t give you a better advice (also here are surely better Napoleonic Guys at the Forum....I´ll do Great War and so suicidal Infantry Attacks are Business as usual for me ). But I´m really lucky that someone want´s to talk about gaming here at the Forum.
Hope that we get more threads about such topics. Would be more interesting as the usual "When will Set XXX be made / moulded / shipped".
