Same here. I also had a bag of wooden bingo numbers - small round drums about half inch tall, and stackable, and chequeres, that formed many a gabion. Wish I still had those as they were my father's toys - sadly long gone :-(

But Lego was often used - castles, ruins, bridges etc. the mod3ern lego is even better - lots of smooth bricks, now available in greens, browns and greys.
