I am reminded of one of my Dad's favorite WWII stories. Somewhere in the Phillipines, a U.S. Army mule fell off a cliff into the ocean and was eaten by sharks before it could be rescued. Obviously, the mule load of equipment was never recovered. Army, Navy, Marine, and even Allied, Supply Quartermasters throughout the entire Pacific Theater found this to be such a great excuse to "write off" missing items from their Property Books, that by the time that mule hit the water, it was carrying a load that would have...wait for it...staggered a mule.
They just don't make Mules like that anymore. What a diorama that would make!
