I think you are referring to the series of three fabulous articles by Keith "Genghis" Benson in Wargames Illustrated #15, 16 and 17 (Nov 1988–Jan 1989). Those were the "good old days" before the magazines became a series of adverts
no James, in fact I wish I were. First issue of WI I ever bought, was in 1991. I'm talking about a children's book on the history of the US, with great (i.e. not exclusively for children) illustrations, and the story started with thr Mayflower and then went on to the Old West.
By the way, I DO remember a 3- or 4-part article, staging a whole skirmish campaign around some log-built fort, during the F-IW, but I think this was in Miniature Wargames.
You are right about the old mags. I'm in a hell of inspiration this period, and the reason is that I'm going through old mag issues. Reminds me of what had inspired me in the first place.
