SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

i'm sure you know that Suede is a band from the U.K. in the 90's.why would you call yourself Suede?
when i google Suede it comes up that band not you.why are you not smart enough to realize how stupid your being?do you hope people come to your show thinking they are seeing the"real" suede?trying to fool the great unwashed.i find that you are one of them.get a life honey.seriously change the ****in name idiot

Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

Wow. first of all, do some digging first. This Suede was around long before the UK band. This Suede successfully sued Sony for the rights to her name, which is why the band has to add "London" before their name in the states.

As for google, if you search for Suede, she is on the first page. I don't even see the point of this argument.

Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

Down Girls! Play nice in the sandbox

Check this out: "Suede were dealt a bitter blow around this time after being threatened with legal action from a US based singer who already went under the name of Suede. Eventually the band were forced to admit defeat and had to rename themselves 'The London Suede' for all future US releases, touring and promotion."

I quess the real question is: who got the big time recording contract and who didn't.

Re: Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

Oh no. The real question is: Who's still shining, stronger and brighter than ever?

This Suede is still the one and only

Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

oh my.... I was told there was quite a buzz around this board lately and I should stop by for a visit.

to be honest, I am surpised and somewhat annoyed that, once again, this tired old issue has resurfaced. but, I am happy to publicly post the details ONE MORE TIME for the sake of everyone, including 'jo' who clearly missed the story when it happened nearly 15 years ago (were you born yet, jo?). it is a LONG story but I shall try to be brief here...

I have gone by my middle name, suede, since I was about 10 years old. it's not a stage name, in other words. I started pursuing my lifelong dream of a career in music, using MY name, in 1983. in 1988 or so it was brought to my attention that a really classless, bad porn writer from atlanta, who was somehow getting national attention, was using the name on their 'work' even saying they were a female blues singer. suddenly I got a lot of mail, as you might imagine, from fans who were surprised, shall we say? it became evident that I should legally trademark the name and I did so immediately to keep the integrity of my name in good standing, especially since I intended to continue to have a public life/career where image and reputation matter. I now own, and keep in good standing - at great expense, two trademarks for my name and, legally speaking, no one else is allowed to use it without my permission. nothing personal, trust me.

in october of 1993 I started getting calls from the press asking for interviews because the cover of Rolling Stone magazine listed "suede" as a "loser" band on their current issue's cover. for the record, they meant the british band, not me. I WISH rolling stone would do a piece on me, thank you. it was then that I learned that the sony corp. brought the british band into the states, signed a deal with them and set them on national tour (in many of the same clubs I was playing, btw, causing much confusion and refunded tickets on the road for clubs, press, promoters, our separate fans, etc.) without first doing the legally required and VERY simple trademark search. to make matters even more confusing, causing what is called "actual confusion" in such a case, the band released a CD on sony's columbia label titled "suede" with a cover photo of what looked like two women kissing. my fans went wild, thinking I had signed with sony, was on my way to the grammys and it was time to crack open the champagne. not. in fact, many of my fans bought copies of the brit band's CD thinking it was mine and could not get refunded once those copies were open, of course. on the other hand, anyone who has EVER mistakenly purchased a ticket to one of my shows since this began, including 2007 at the birchmere in washington, DC, has been issued a full refund and offered a free seat to see MY show, instead. my intention all along, in all regards is to be in integrity and come from generosity. that said, jo, if you have any interest in seeing my show, this is your public invitation.

the confusion continued and increased despite doing my best in a non legal manner to dilute the problem. it soon became clear I had to pursue the issue legally. it took a lot of nerve and a lot of convincing my attorneys (a national team of 10 to take on sony corp) that if we really took on the sony corp. I was up to the challenge. I felt strongly enough about what I had already worked so hard on my own to accomplish with my name that I took on the battle against sony - my own davey and goliath story, in fact. and believe me, sony was not kind. instead, no surprise, they were extremely intimidating, demeaning, and despite knowing they had no case because of my trademarks, were able to draw the battle out for almost two years before the judge hearing the case finally had enough, ruling that my trademarks were in good standing and the british band had to use the name "london suede" in the US and show best efforts to clear up any confusion caused by their lack of the initial name search.

for the record, the musicians in the british band were wonderful to deal with, completely understood the problem, apologized for sony dropping the ball on such a detail. afterall, they were also victims of the confusion between our fans, promoters, clubs, etc. they were great to me. I wish I could say the same for their fans, however. I received quite a bit of hate mail from many of them for some time during and after the settled case, many blaming me for the band failing in the US (I'm THAT powerful?), accusing me, as jo does here, of being a fake, being downright nasty and rude, etc. how absurd. despite all our efforts and the fact that the band actually broke up about 5 years ago I still, occasionally get nasty, immature mail from their fans. so, welcome to the gang, jo. sorry I inadvertantly offended you by simply trying to keep my career as an independent artist, creating, owning and running my own business alive in a very tough industry.

to my dear fans who have come to my rescue here -- thank you. you're all my heroes. I have said it before and will say again, I have YOU to thank for this 25 year career and yes, I am shining and a long way from done, thanks to you. also for the record, I am not the elusive "excuse me" and have no idea who that is.

questions, anyone?

be well, everyone.
and come out to see the show! we're having a BLAST and packing them in!

Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

May I add to my list, Suede has my utmost respect to take the time and energy replying with "complete class", even generosity, to such immature and hatred remarks.

Not only are you my favorite musician, artist, singer, songwriter, performer, "aka, Diva" ... you are such an excellent mentor and I truly adore you!

I love visiting this forum to keep in touch with Suede's "Dangerous Mood", until I have the opportunity to get a dose of the real deal once again.

A Big "Thank You" to my fellow Suede fans for being out there and sharing the "Suedewaves"~~~

You take care Suede, and keep on defying that gravity!
ML

Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

Many THANKS Suede, David, Music Lover and ML for taking the HIGH ROAD (and time) in posting the FACTS and "seasoning" a bitter tongue!!

To HIGHER "notes" of support,
Terri

Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

Once again Suede shows what a classy and cool person and musician she really is. Keep on that "high road", we will always be right by your side. Now I hope you are enjoying taking in the sunny rays and cool breezes of the Cape.
Any news on whether Suede will be performing at Women's Week??? My fingers are crossed.
Lynne

Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

I am amazed that Jo would post such a nasty without checking the facts. The best thing you can do, Jo, is to admit you made a HUGE mistake buy a copy of Dangerous Moods, sit down with your partner, sip a class of good wine and enjoy a fanastic voice. As you can see.....Suede has many, many loyal fans. I trust we will not hear from you again until you learn some manners.

Re: SUEDE IS A BAND FROM THE U.K.

In all fairness to you Jo and all of Suede's devoted fans the path is clear. Jo, accept Suede's' offer to go to the show. Suede makes it a party and we rejoice with her. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Our favorite artist did not endure without good reason. It's one thing to sing a Capella or the down right gritty blues, play the keys or horn, But when you put that all together you have Easily Suede, 1988. There are good entertainers and there are great entertainers. I need not say more about Suede. I would like to say to you Jo,
