Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

And YES!!! Newbies, indeed - a virgin in your midst. Be gentle...

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

I'd like to hear EVERY song you have ever used in your performances!!!!! Okay, back to reality...last year you sang a song with your guitar that I believe is an African American song. I'd love to hear that again. But any song you sing is a wonderful experience to be part of. Until tonight...

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

For some reason, my post did not go through so i reiterate;

Yes, tonight will be what I hope is the first of many. a virgin in your midst - be gentle...

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Oops my post DID go through. It didn't occur to me to use the 'Next' prompt. Duhh... I must REALLY need a night out!!!!!!!

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

As for suggestions of songs for tonight, how about all the ones you've used in every performance? Okay, back to reality... I loved the one you did last year with your guitar at the Tin Angel. I think it was an African American song. Any song you sing will be an experience for us to be part of it and we all will be delighted. I can't wait til tonight. Have a great day in Philly.
Lynne

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Amy... I just did the same thing and re posted as I didn't see the next box. I wonder if that's a "Philly thing" ? Until to tonight....Lynne

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Lynne - Speaking for myself, it's not a Philly thing. I don't know how old you are but for me, it's probably a 'fifty' thing, born and raised into an analog world but having to live in a digital one.

I hope I get into town early enough to visit the Rodin Museum. Spent a weekend in Philly with one of my girlfriends earlier in the summer, visited every gallery in the old city and some by the university but missed Rodin - he was incredible.

Re: Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

how very interesting...that very song has been in MY head lately for some reason. I've always loved it. wacky.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Ah Amy for me it most be a sixty thing...I am now in a new decade and love it. I hope you get to the Rodin Museum. I've seen his work in NYC at the Museum of Art but as typical of a person who lives so close to attractions, I have not gone to his museum here. Perhaps that should be put on my "To do list". You'll love Suede and walk out on air after her performance.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

If you liked Billy Elliot, then you'll love Billy Elliot, the musical, which makes Broadway in either late 2007 or early 2008. It's run in London won it the Olivier Award for best musical of 2006. It is very political and at present they're re-tooling for the American audience.

Saw you at the Tin Angel last night and you and Janice Friedman were amazing! How fortunate your paths crossed!

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Ladies,

Let's run this line from a movie up the flag pole & see if it flies (or stumps anyone as the case may be):

"What we have here (pronounced in an exaggerated drawl as a two-syllable word 'he-yah') is a failure to communicate!"

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

movies:
REBECCA
suede in the lead role opposite orlando bloom!

singers:
BETTE MIDLER
suede
rosemary clooney
dolly parton (a ledgened nobody admits to loving)

broadway:
BEA ARTHUR ON BROADWAY: short run best ever.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Ann,
I think Dolly is great. I love her music and her attitude. I guess I'm one person who will admit it!!!!
Lynne

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

in my remake of REBECCA, suede will take no crapolla from that maid and the man she is forced to marry. thank god she kills him in the end because..... the maid has been in love with her the whole time! THIS IS THE ACTUAL VERY SHORT VERSION OF THE MOVIE!! bette midler will be the maid, bea arthur will narrate. ellen and sharon stone the next door neighbors. suede will do the sound track of course.
janice will make a dress for the wedding out of the curtains.....sorry wrong movie!!

how about a remake of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE......SUEDE AND VICKI SHAW as the old ladies!

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

I just returned from the Alaska Olivia Tour to find that I missed out on a fantastic discussion about movie, books, best vocals and on and on.

Ladies, you did yourselves proud! Thank you for sharing what you like to read and see. I will have to make a copy of this entire chat and then break it down into lists of what to read for the first time and others to read again. Another list will be for the movies that I have not seen yet.

What a wonderful chat! Keep it up! Please add Frankie Jones to the list of light books to read for fun. (She writes under the name Frankie Jones and Megan Carter)

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Fabulous thread- like myspace for the middle aged!(Forgive my chronological assumptions if I am making any in error!) Anyway, thanks for the great reading suggestions!

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Oh, PS- didn't see anybody jump in with these two answers ( maybe I missed it) but the x rated oscar winner is Midnight Cowboy and the "failure to communicate" is from Cool Hand Luke. I'll throw a few of my favorites out:

1. "He got a Googlie!"
2. What's the matter with those guys?
3. You're gonna need a bigger boat.
4. I'd make a good Gordon, Gordon.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Oh, PS again, since we seem to be somewhat on the topic of favorite british actresses, two words: Helen Mirren.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Hey, Goudecs
Line 3 is from 'Jaws'. Ah, I remember well. Summer of '75, 4 days after I saw the movie, partying with my pals, ended up in the ocean in the weeeeeeee hours not wearing too much as I recall....

Line 4 Just a guess, Wall Street?

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Amy-
Well done on Jaws! My brother hasn't gone in the ocean ever since, I swear. That line makes any overwhelming circumstance funny. Oh, and think a more obscure and multitalented Gordon.... ;)

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Line: What's the matter with those guys?

Answer: Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Correct about "Cool Hand Luke"

"I'd make a good Gordon, Gordon" sounds like something one of the muppets would say on Sesame Street!

Try this one: What does the name of the computer system in "2001: Space Odyssey" stand for?

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Mint Julip - Goodmorning!
Are you referring to HAL? If so, it's a coded referance to IBM - each letter in IBM is one letter ahead of H-A-L.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Amy,

You're right on target. For those of my generation, IBM was the only computer company anyone had ever heard of at that time. And college students were still using slide rulers as large hand-held calculators were just coming to the market!

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Wow- you gals are fast. Excellent on the Butch Cassidy, btw.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Good morning all.

This inquiring mind wants to know the correct answer to "I'd make a good Gordon, Gordon," ....still sounds like Big Bird or Grover talking to Gordon on Sesame Street to me!

Try this movie quote on for size:

"What would you have me do? Give out? Give up? Give in?"

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Oooh, that's a good one- I can kind of hear it, but it isn't there for me- yet. I will resist the urge of google... ;) Will now Give It Up regarding Gordon. It's from one of my all time favorites - Local Hero. It's in the scene at the "kalee" (probably not the right spelling) where Mac is trying to convince Urquhart- Gordon- to trade lives with him.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Thanks for letting my brain out of the hamster cage about Gordon....I just kept going around in circles!

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Let's get back to the title of this thread. "Books, Movies, Music Suggestions". I read the inspiration of the thread, "Delta Belles" and am interested in the response to the book from others. Suede, you took objection to "the little known", however Stokes was writing during the 1994 period and the song "No Regrets" was from your your first CD "Easily Suede", therefore, I would think that "little known" probably fit the bill. I felt the book read easy, but thought of it as a female soap opera.

Has anyone read "Everyman". I would be interested in your thoughts.

I just picked up "Teacher Man" by Frank McCourt... author of "Angela's Ashes" and "Tis".

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

I left home to go on the Olivia Alaska Cruise and then had other things to do before I got back to the Message Board. What a fanastic chat I missed! WOW! Thank you all for the information you discussed. I just printed the entire chat and it totaled 21 pages. Now my reading for the next year is all laid out. Everyone that took part in this chat has my gratitude. Perhaps at a later date you might do it again.(?)

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Amy, I did what you did....forgot to hit next! I could not find my first post so did a second. Then I made a copy of the "next" and have 8 more pages. What a remarkable chat.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

For all of us Maggie Smith fans...I just saw an advertisement for her upcoming movie, "Keeping Mum". I sure hope it's a good one, but then again all of her's have been. I'm looking forward to the next Judi Dench one also, but have no idea when. Does anyone know if she's releasing a movie soon?
Amy sorry to hear that you didn't get to the museum, but that calls for another trip into our fair city.
Lynne

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

Judi Dench: New movie coming out around Nov. 17. Remake of James Bond "Casino Royale". Dench plays Madame M.

Just finished Frank McCourt's "Teacher Man". A must read for all teachers, past and present. He examines his 30 years of teaching H.S. English in NYC schools... vocational, honors, and night college. Every teacher can relate to his trials and tribulations as a teacher.

Re: book, movie, music suggestions!!

November 17th, the date all penguin lovers have been waiting for… the premier of “Happy Feet”!

I have stated before that I am not a movie theater goer… but prefer Netflix or Blockbuster. However, I was not about to be out done by Suede and her fans, so off to the movies I went.

When I got to the theater for the 4:00 PM show, I was told that the computer made a mistake and the show was scheduled for 4:45. Since the ticket seller was on the young side, I refrained from telling her that humans make mistakes, not computers. When did the price of tickets change from 25 cents to $5.50 (with senior discount)? Across the aisle from the theaters was the food court, so for $4.75 I got a slice of pizza and a small diet.

I went into the theater about 15 minutes before the start and of course had to have popcorn… $3.75 for a small bag… no drink (Now up to $14.00). The theater was virtually empty and I happily thought about all the kids I was missing. Just into the first preview, day care must have let out, and in came all the little rug rats and their parents. Now, I like kids… if they don’t cry or scream… just sit there and eat your popcorn. From the beginning to the end, I do not think one kernel of popcorn was consumed by the little ones.

Now for the movie: Animation has sure come a long way! And the voice overs actually match the moving of the lips. Robin Williams did a great job as did Elijah Wood. It was cute, funny, endearing and my feet were happy!

One thought: Either parents are to remember that PG-13 does not mean 13 month old rug rats OR I need to remember to hit the midnight showing!
