Can anyone ID this badge.
Crimson velvet padded silver bullion ducal crown over an oval strap in blue with the silver bullion motto, "ESPERANCE EN DIEU" (in god I hope). In the centre is a silver upward facing fat crescent moon. All on a dk. blue / black backing cloth and clearly very old. 8cm tall.
Similar central motive to the Portsmouth badge but without the star.
Any ideas welcomed.
A badge similar to this appeared on eBay recently which was described as Hungerford Police. Hungerford never had a police force. The description certainly fits the description of arms or seal of Hungerford. A few years ago I had a lot of correspondence from the local archives there relating to another badge which was from the Hungerford Yeomany. It is a possibility that your badge could have been worn by them.
