Whilst not having a complete answer to your question, I do know that a form of "custom money" in the Western Islands was made from fossilised clam shell.
I once found some deep in the forest in the form of large rings. I would have said that they had a yellowish touch to them. More a sort of ivory colour.

I wonder if this is what you have found.
