Football overload!!

The price our talented under 18's are paying is too much football. Some weeks, specially at this end of the season, players are turning out for their own youth side, the reserves AND the first team.
This is surely too much for even the fittest of super-teens and may have a bearing on the 18's lack of further progress in their cup competitions.
We rely on youth and bringing young players through is a very good policy in my opinion but they need protection, from themselves and from team managers who don't seem to see this as a problem.
We (rightly in my view) criticise first teamers who turn out for Sunday sides yet watch the 18's do precisely the same thing with the club's blessing.
The answer is not easy to find. Do we say that a player can only play for one side, in which case the 18's would have a very difficult decision to make (ie not to play for the first team)or what???

Re: Football overload!!

Yes you are right about the amount of football these boys are playing, Most of them are being protected bu management.

At the beginning of the season it was discussed that the reserve side would be a good opportunity for the young players to develop into the first team and have done so in the likes of Sam Kettle, Rob Lawrence and a lot of others have all come through the reserves.

The question about playing for both teams has been an issue, as a lot of these boys are unable to play on Saturdays at all, even if the first team needs them, and some of the players rather go out ona friday night rather than a saturday night so they will be in no fit to play on a saturday.

Im now slowly getting to a position where i have now some good players who are experienced in the Kent League and then the youth can go round them and it doesnt matter which ones.

We are one of the only clubs to play as many youth players in their first team and reserves but as you say we need to protect the better players so they dont leave the club....... to be continued

Re: Football overload!!

And so it rears its ugly head. Yes they are playing too much football fact! However we are talking grass roots football and not Higher echelons so nothing has changed over the years. When i was their age i played for the school midweek and Sat mornings, the Cabin youth club on a Sat afternoon, Kestrels on a Sunday morning, and then Ricemans (Thanet Works league) on a Sunday afternoon. Plus in the Summer months Herne Bay youth against visiting French students, plus any other spare time that was available! That was playing too much football trust me The answer? Who knows when you dont pick the youth players the club are holding them back, when you do they are playing to many games! And on it goes
