Some interesting replies/comments there. I had not intended to upset anyone though about 1/72 figures. I speak as someone who has private mailed HaT enough about scale creep issues, and find the Zvezda/Italeri policy just plain aggravating.
However, it was more whether a completely new range would be of interest, although that would create supply issues around sculptor time.
For me, it is a new urge to recreate the "good old days", when figures were "basic" to say the least, and paint jobs matched them. The latest sculpts are so good in most cases that I really hate doing a simple paint job on them - it feels like I am devaluing them in some way.
Steve - it was the reprint that started me this way. I agree that the production values could have been a bit higher, but I delivberately chose it over a 2nd hand original so that some small part of the cover price would find its way to the Grant family, as a way of showing my thanks for such a great introduction to the hobby. I have checked out the 30mm staddens etc via Spencer Smith, but I find for my kids the metals just chip too easily (and to think that metal buyers moan about soft plastic flexing and peeling!) when they play a bit rough with them (and bear in mind my eldest is coming up to 14, so I am not talking playing in the sand pit here, just they tend to push troops together etc - my ECW cavalry have lost paint off stirrups etc). The old style plastics have a charm and simplicity about them. I agree with the new 28mm plastics, except that I think they look a bit too detailed for what I want and a bit cartoony, to tie in with the metal ranges. mind you, a SYW may tempt me.
Do I get the feeling you are an English gamer though Steve? Whereabouts? |
