seiche!!

Check this out from NWS:
339 PM CDT WED JUL 2 2008

...LAKESHORE FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM CDT THIS EVENING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CHICAGO HAS ISSUED A LAKESHORE
FLOOD WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM CDT THIS EVENING.

A RAPID 2 FOOT DROP OF LAKE MICHIGAN WATER LEVELS ON THE EAST
SIDE OF LAKE MICHIGAN IS EVIDENCE THAT A 2 FOOT RISE OR BETTER IS
POSSIBLE AT THE CHICAGO BEACHES IN THE NEXT HOUR. A FLUCTUATION OF
WATER LEVELS AT THESE BEACHES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE EVENING.
THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS EVENT FOR WADERS ALONG THE CHICAGO
LAKESHORE. THE WATER LEVELS MAY FLUCTUATE RAPIDLY...TAKING
UNSUSPECTING WADERS OUT TO MORE OPEN WATERS. EVACUATE DOCKS...
PIERS...AND BREAKWALLS NOW.

A LAKESHORE FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS OCCURRING OR
IMMINENT ALONG THE LAKE. RESIDENTS ON OR NEAR THE SHORE IN THE
WARNED AREA SHOULD BE ALERT FOR RISING WATER...AND TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY.

Re: seiche!!

2nd or third this year. Caused by the gust front of strong thunderstorms as they move across the lake. But you probably know that already being a sailor on the big lake.

I talked with some friends down in Florida about Lake Okeechobee and it's seiche during hurricanes. The swings in water depth are huge, at times 8-12 feet due to winds and pressure drops.

Re: seiche!!

i think this one was more due to pressure differentials than wind. we were motoring out of the south shore harbor and at the breakwall gap it looked like a whirlpool with all that water rushing out. i'd never seen that before, and it looked pretty cool. winds were still pretty light then.

had a pretty fun wed-night beer can race, too, until the frontal line showed up just as we were rounding the leeward mark and the race was abandoned. the sky looked incredible, and scary. winds topped 30kts.
