Milwaukee Sewage Dump... started at 6pm 4/10/08
Don't swallow any water if you go in on Friday... they opened up the deep tunnel overflow thursday at 6pm and said it would go all night. With 2 inches or so of rain I'm sure the runoff isn't going to do much for water quality on Friday either. I think I'll wait for a "cleaner" swell.

I heard of this happening before, and it destroyed a bunch of beaches in IL. I find it rather disgusting that the city would dump raw sewage right into the lake. It is just Environmentally terrible. The city needs a better runoff system than this, but of course, out of sight, out of mind right? I hate that logic and the fact that it still pervades. I am hoping if this does cause more issues with IL that they'll sue, because apparently, from what I heard, that is exactly what they'd do to MKE if a sewage dump like this destroyed any lake front down south of here again. Back home, my city *rochester, mn* had a flood control system put in, and we've not dumped any sewage. even the day we got nearly 11 inches of rain. The river was very high, but the city was fine. Milwaukee's bigger, but maybe it's time to upgrade the system. |

Joe told me about some research being done locally to plot harbor currents and near shore currents. When he gets me a url for the web site I'll check it out. As I understand it the info is pretty technical and preliminary with no archived data available as of yet. If it is useful I'll let you know. MMSD is working on improving the system and holding capacity. I think that some of the new investments are due to vocal protests against past dumping. We have had a lot of rain and with the snow melt the soil is pretty saturated. There is a lot of crap flowing into our lake from sources other than the sewers. Remember that when you think about applying fertilizers and pesticides to your gorgeous lawns. Just sayin'. |

well yeah, there is the fertilizer/ pesticide runoff too, not to mention washing one's car in the driveway and washing all that grey water. Sewage is a problem, but not the only one. Aside, I'd like to see some of the current modeling though, that'd be cool to look at. |

http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/ofs/lmofs/now_cur.shtml That really is too bad anyone feels justification for releasing garbage into our lakes. You would think we are intelligent enough to not being doing this. Even littering on our beaches makes me sick......there is such a major difference in water quality the further north one travels. |

Just checked Rocky Bowls. Sloppy. And...brown gunky water with bits of this and that floating in it, makes cladaphora look clean.

I saw an article in the Journal a few weeks ago about expanding the deep tunnel this summer. At that time the tunneling machine was being assembled in a big warehouse some place in Milwaukee. A bigger deep tunnel will help, but another part of the problem is the combined storm and sanitary sewer in older parts of the metro area. That is why some environmental groups advocate capturing rain water in a barrel. |

human waste and water runoff shouldn't be in the same system. If it does back up, for whatever reason, that could be a major health hazard... It's a worldwide problem, I'm just thankful we've moved beyond a lot of places because they still just dump straight into the ocean. Like Venice, beautiful city... those canals ARE the sewage system. It smells to high heaven if you're in some places and close to the water. I would just think that after what has happened in the past that MKE would have been on top of things sooner. |

Waukeewaukee, Thanks for doing your part to avoid sewerage dumps into the lake. What do you do with the rain water that you capture? There is a show on digital cable that I think you might find interesting. Go to channel 1001, move over to the Sundance section, and click on Big Ideas- Water. There are three issues covered. One of them is capturing rainwater for all water uses. The example is on an island somewhere. But there is also mention of Firehouses in Hawaii that get all their domestic water and firefighting water from collecting rain water. The show is set up like on demand movies, but is free. |
