Message:   I graduated in 2007 also and I feel the same as you. I have only been doing hygiene for a little over a year and I know that I wil not be happy doing this for the next 20 years. My best friend is in nursing school right now and I do not envy her. She is very stressed out. Her classes are tough, clinicals are very demanding, and she is seriously questioning whether this was the right move. Many nursing programs are urging students to go beyond an A.S because hospitals give preference to those that have a BSN. Nursing is a tough job. I have quite a few patients that are in nursing and the majority of them have told me that they are not happy. I would speak with other nurses before you make this career move. Ask about the programs in your area and find out what the pay rate is.
Personally, I would stick with hygiene for now. You are fortunate to have a full time job. There are many hygienists that cannot find work. Take some time to think about your financial situation. Can you afford to quit work and be a full time student? Nursing school is very much like hygiene school...demanding, little free time, stressful..ect ect.
Have you ever considered getting a degree in a different field?? You already have a B.S maybe you can use a lot of those credits toward a new degree? That is what I am doing right now. I working toward getting a B.S in a completely different field. I only have a few more classes to go and I am doing it entirely online. I really like it this way because I am able to keep working while I finish school. It made the most sense for me $$ wise...no traveling, flexable ect ect.
Let us know what you decide!! Best of luck to you!!
