Subject:   gross debridement confusion

How long have you been an RDH?   4
Message:   I switched to a different office 1 year ago & the DDS has been in pract. for some time. He is big into gross debridement any patient that has not had a prophy in a year should have a gross debridement and even before s/rp!! He opened a new office so we are seeing tons of NP's -- after probing pt's w/4-6 mm post. pockets he wants a gross debridement done then sch. for s/rp......

.. In hygiene school i was not taught gross debridement before s/rp-- if I gross scale that pt. then some tissues heal, they come back for s/rp and the pocket has decreased but there could still be sub. calc left behing to cause future problems!!! that is where i am soooo confused!!

In the office i worked at right out of school - if we had a patient that had 4-6mm pockets gen. we would schedule for s/rp or if we had time we would start s/rp right then if patient agreed!!

I feel I should let this DDS know how I am feeling but do not want to step on his toes- since he has more experience!??! any help on this issue would be great!!!
