Subject:   Arestin & Atridox dilemma! Tips appreciated!

Message:   We typically place Atridox in a patient with a lot of pocketing, as it is more cost effective for the patient. You can place Atridox in many sites, costing the patient only $120. Cons: The placement is a more tedious and it takes too much time. I do not care for it. Whereas, with Arestin, which I PREFER due to ease of placement, you treat only 4 sites for $120 (approx. $30/site). It's clearly more expensive.

So, say I have a patient with 17 sites at 5mm and above. To place Arestin at $30/site would cost $510. Sorry, but I cannot ethically feel like this is even an option! How appalling to charge that much!

But with Atridox, I can treat those sites with 1 or 2 syringes at a cost to the patient of $120-240! Still pretty expensive! If that were my mouth, I'd say "this BETTER work or I want my money back" (and on top of that, they are a smoker!) The problem is, to place Atridox in 17 sites is unbelievably tedious (especially in 5mm pockets), and uses too much clinic time. We just can't schedule 20 minutes extra for placement. I have trouble treating a patient with Arestin and charging them $510!

THIS GETS CONFUSING, SO PAY ATTENTION :)
Some offices will do a 'per tooth' charge for Arestin ($50), but this is not fair because sometimes one patient is paying for more than he is actually getting- and other patients are getting more than what they are paying.

Patient #1: the 17 sites are located on a total of 3 teeth (ML, DL, MB, DB, L, B of #18, #19, #20). This would cost that patient $150 at the per tooth charge.

Patient #2: the 17 sites are spread out over 7 teeth (DB, MB of #18, #19, #20; DL, ML #21, L #22, DL, L, ML, B #23, #24), this would cost $350. The same amount of product is used for both--but Patient #2 is paying $200 more than Patient #1! It's not ethical to me!

How are you using Arestin in your practice? How can we make it work? I've been using Atridox for years and still can't master the stuff. I simply do not want to use it anymore- it's not valuable and definitely interferes with productivity and efficiency. Note: we are not a productivity driven office, just productivity in general gets compromised. A patient is naturally going to choose the cheaper one (Atridox), but it shouldn't be cheaper due to the time consumption and nightmare that it is!

Thanks for any input you can share!
