Message:   Caleb Eldred was my GR-GR uncle, from Pittstown, NY.
I have known for years that he served in the 15th NY Regt. Heavy Art. This I know from his service and his pension records which I have.
After the war he settled in Topeka, Kansas where he is buried. I recently have come across a Kansas State Census dated Mar. 1st, 1905 where my uncle notes that he served in the Vermont 7th Infantry, in what looks to be either I or L company.
I have not found my uncle's name in any Vermont Regimental histories. Could this have been a mistake on my uncles part due to failing health or memory.
Or, could he have tried to sign up in a Vermont regiment at the start of the war?
In 1861 he would have been 16 or 17 years old.
He ended up serving in the NY 15th from Oct. 6th 1863 until Aug. 22nd, 1865.
Does anyone out there want to tackle this mystery ?
This one blew me away when I saw it.
Please Help!
Gary P. Salmon
