The best thing to do is to download the update only. This is just the executable file and perhaps a few other new data files - which means that upon install, no data is overwritten. Otherwise, backup your \Data\ directory (use winzip for example) and then overwrite the files copied by the installer.

Unfortunately, DM Genie can only run under Windows 95/NT. It has been succesfully tested on Virtual PC on a Mac running Mac OS X. It may or may not work on other emulators.

You should always BACKUP your data before installing an update. Zip your entire campaign directory and subdirectories (using winzip for example). You are safest when using a Custom Campaign rather than the Core Rules campaign - none of your custom campaign's data is overwritten by the update program.
The update may require you to copy RULES.TXT or other files to your campaign's Data directory.
Some updates include more goodies if you download the full install. Doing so will erase any changes made to Core Rules! So make backups if needed. From the Core Rules, you can Export the items/races/feats... etc. that you want, and then Import them into your custom campaign.

Probably - it runs fairly quickly even on a P2 233 MHz. It will run also on a P1 100 MHz, although slower. The more memory you have the better - at least 32 megs is recommended!

Probably not. DM Genie uses a lot of memory and needs a lot of screen space - two things that are in short supply in Personal Digital Assistants.
